Wink iT Tech Focus: The End of Torrents?

How many of you guys heard about Pirate bay founder being caught last week?

    Yup.

    It happened.

The governments all over the world are doing it again, they are planning to shut down the whole torrent system, just like they did for Mega upload.

As an avid movie downloader (yes, I do download Torrents), I am against this action of the government, but at the same time, I do understand the loss of the producers and distributors when movies are distributed across the web for free (My opinion is that these distributors should make the movie available to public for free 3-4 months after the initial release - of course, they can also include "ads" in between these movies, so that they can at least gain back some money lost by making it available for free).

Today, I just learned from Mathrubhumi Tech news that the torrents are very easy to track (and there are several different companies that do track - all the distributor needs to do is to file a suite against the downloaders).

This was found out during a research conducted by Birmingham University. The research was conducted for 3 years using a torrent downloader they developed, which they claim is very close to main stream torrent downloading tools.

They have found out that 10 different companies across the world are capable of tracking and are tracking the downloaders of their movies - some are security companies, other distributors, while some are research based organizations.

Now, with all this news, I want to ask you, is what the government or these tracking agencies doing legal (not with the governmental definition, but our own definition, of course, we don't want to be biased). If you are a torrent downloader, you are more likely to be against these actions. But, what's your opinion?

Is this a matter of privacy?

How about the producers and distributors and actors? All these people are making movies to make money - and they have to pay a lot too, to junior workers involved, to other companies etc.

Of course, we could make the argument that for big companies, it's not much loss. But, how about small companies?

New directors and producers who have to make money to survive in the industry?

Yes, they are. Pakshe distributorsinu varunna nastavum nammal kanakil edukande. I think the distributors themselves should publish the movies online 4-5 months after its release. Videoyinte edayil ads ittal mathiyelo..to get atleast part of the revenue back. What do you think?

Bcoz..they lose a lot of money due to piracy...the producers..distributors and every guy/gal who is involved in making a movie is doing it for money (most probably they are; yes, some do it to help someone they know and others for charity reasons perhaps or maybe because they like the arts). But, they all spent a lot of time/money/effort into making a movie.
