Gaadha is an upcoming Indian feature film directed by Shaji N. Karun. The film is a bilingual in Malayalam and Hindi and stars Mohanlal and Odissi danseuse Kadambari in the lead roles. It is a cinematic adaptation of writer T. Padmanabhan's short story "Kadal", based on Indian classical music in symphony orchestra. Director Shaji N. Karun and Mohanlal are rejoining for a film after a gap of 13 years. The film's music is composed by Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, best known for his compositions in feted director Krzysztof Kieślowski's classics making his debut foray into Indian cinema.

After portraying the helplessness of Kunjikkuttan, the Kathakali performer in 'Vanaprastham', who has left an indelible imprint on viewer's mind and soul, Mohanlal will once again play the lead in a Shaji N Karun movie. The director, who is a purveyor of well-crafted and internationally acclaimed fares, this time goes for T Padmanabhan's story 'Kadal'.
"The scripting is almost completed. We are planning to start the movie by this year end," says Shaji N Karun.Kadal is considered one of the most touching story written in Malayalam. And what are the elements of allure that prompt the master filmmaker to opt 'Kadal'?
"Music, sea and poetry are the recurrent themes of the story which revolves around three characters, a father, mother and daughter. There are some feelings in life that are perennial. Such emotions mainly rely upon time to attain meaningfulness. That is one factor that prompted me to opt this story," Shaji adds.

In 'Kadal', the narrative is unveiled through the mother's diary which the daughter keeps as a memoir. The complex nuances of the character of the mother, the level of misunderstanding between mother and father and an omnipresent involvement of the mother's music teacher are the major undercurrents of the story. While reading the diary, the daughter gets an initial impression that 'all is not well' between her parents.
"But when she further turns the pages, she comes across lines in which mother shares her compassion for her husband who allowed her to pursue her passion for music and about her music teacher with whom she has a peculiar relation. Finally, after the death of the mother, as they return home, the father says, 'I was never able to understand her. I can never understand her world.' Meanwhile, the daughter is thinking of her mother who always dreamt of sea but was never able to see the sea, and about her missed childhood. It is a story just about people, emotions and also that of time," Shaji says.
The narrative of the original story is different and the names of the characters are not mentioned anywhere in it. "We are giving final touches to the script. Each character will have its own depth," the director says. He adds that the final discussions are going on and the whether the movie will be an Indo-French collaboration is yet to be finalised.

After a gap of nearly three years, award-winning director Shaji N Karun is doing what he knows best. And this time around, he?s exploring the music of silence with his new movie, G a d h a , which is based on K a d a l, a story by renowned writer T Padmanabhan.
?The story has a stream of silence and music, and I want to give visual expression to that by using the sea as a metaphor of music,? he told the T i m e s o f I n d i aon the sidelines of the inaugural function of the 12th All India Cultural Meet organized by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) here on Wednesday.
?In Padmanabhan?s story, the protagonist has never seen the sea though he has always longed to see it. This stream of unfulfilled dreams is a reality in many lives. And this is what I would like to depict in G a d h a, the shooting of which would begin in November in Banaras. Other locations include Ajmer, Shimla and Lakshadweep,? Shaji said.
The story had many layers that would be a challenge to any filmmaker, said Shaji, adding that it had greater possibilities of musical expression. Since music that transcends all geographical boundaries is a key element in this film, he was trying to explore the spiritual dimension of the symphony and the opera in this film, said Shaji. ?That is why I decided on Zbigniew Preisner, who has worked with legends like Krzysztof Kieslowski, as the music director,? Shaji said.
?Being a human being who understands people?s pains having witnessed the wars and bloodsheds in Poland, his music has an element of spirituality in it. And that spirituality is being reinterpreted here in an Indian context,? he said.
