Default Youth held in connection with CA student’s death

He had repeatedly contacted the girl over phone, say police officials

The ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of Mishel Shaji Varghese, a CA student in Kochi, took a new turn on Monday with the city police arresting a 26-year-old youth in connection with the incident. The investigation team is likely to register a case against him for abetment to suicide.

According to police officials, the man, identified as Cronin Alexander Baby, a native of Piravom and currently working in Chhattisgarh, was taken into custody after receiving information that he had repeatedly contacted the girl over phone. “Mishel had switched off her phone by 3.35 p.m. soon after she called Cronin,” they said.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Cronin and Mishel had known each other for over two years and their relationship ended in last April.

“Cronin has given a statement that he had repeatedly called her even after that. The frequency of his calls and messages increased days before she died. We are investigating whether his actions led to her suicide,” said a senior officer with the Kochi city police. The girl had reportedly told the youth that she had some plans and he would know about it on Monday.

“The accused had stalked and pestered her so much that he made six calls and sent around 55 text messages to her a day before her death,” they added.

The police also questioned another man who had stalked the girl in Kochi, but failed to elicit any leads from him.

While Mishel’s family suspects foul play, the police said that it was a case of drowning. “Preliminary investigations do not show anything unnatural,” said a senior officer in the probe team, adding that the victim’s body didn’t have any injury apart from a bruise on her lips.

Meanwhile, the State government has declared a Crime Branch probe into the case.

Action council

An all-party meet held in Piravom on Monday decided to form an action council to ensure a fair probe into the death of Mishel. “The action council will meet Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday,” said Shaji Varghese, the girl’s father. According to him, the police initially refused to register a complaint and also failed to track the mobile tower location. “Instead, they tried to close the case in haste, terming it as a case of suicide,” he said.

Hartal at Piravom

Meanwhile, the people of Piravom have decided to observe a dawn-to-dusk hartal on Tuesday to protest against the alleged police laxity and press for a speedy investigation. Suresh Gopi, MP, was among those who visited the house of the girl at Piravom.

The girl, a native of Elanji, Periyapuram, Piravom, was pursuing chartered accountancy course and staying in a hostel at Kacheripady. She left the hostel in the evening on March 5 and went missing thereafter. Her body was found near the Ernakulam wharf at 8.45 p.m. the next day.

Youth Congress and Kerala Students Union activists staged a protest march in front of the City Police Commissioner’s office on Monday against the alleged police apathy in probing the death of the student.

It makes me so mad, why did the police not take immediate action, why didn't they set off straight away and investigate?

Why do the police insist it is a suicide?

Did she leave a suicide note for the police to be so sure that she killed herself?

Why should a pretty and bright girl kill herself?

I think there is foul play here and some very suspicious behaviour from the police, it looks very much as if they deliberately did not take action, and when pressurized, they took their time to do anything.

There is a strong smell of corruption , is someone powerful , or rich involved?

I think, the current police involved should be suspended and a new and more dedicated police team take over and a thorough investigation carried out.

Let a thorough post -mortem take place also.

The youth of Kerala should not rest till justice is done to Mishel Varghese, !
